How to Find the Topside Inn
Our bed and breakfast in Boothbay Harbor is just a short drive from Portland, Maine and a reasonable distance from many other popular New England destinations. Our historic bed and breakfast is easily found atop McKown Hill on the Maine coast. Returning guests may find us by instinct, but for new visitors directions are a must!
From Most of the World (Portland, Maine and I-95 North)
I-95 North enters Maine crossing the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, NH into Kittery, and is the primary interstate (highway, freeway, motorway) for visitors driving to our state. Traveling north, it passes the Portland airport before our exits.
From I-95 in Maine use Exit 52 and connect to I-295 North. (If already in downtown Portland, get on I-295 North directly). Follow I-295 North about 20 miles and use Exit 31 at Topsham. Turn right on Route 196 and proceed about 2 miles, through several lights and over the river, to Route 1 North (turn from left lane).
Stay on coastal Route 1 North past Bath, then continue 10 miles through the village of Wiscasset. After crossing the two bridges over the Sheepscot River, get in the right lane and follow signs to turn RIGHT on Route 27 South, the 'Boothbay Harbor Region.'
*From Routes 1 & 27-South: Boothbay Harbor Region*
Take it easy and enjoy scenic Route 27 South for 11 miles, past Edgecomb and Boothbay to Boothbay Harbor. At "the" traffic light (Hannaford market is on the right), go straight ahead and up the hill. Stay right at the bank's temperature sign onto Oak Street (one-way) and continue about one-half mile. Watch for the "CarQuest Auto Parts" store on the right, and then make the next RIGHT TURN onto Howard Street.
Continue past the fire station and town parking lot. At the yield, merge straight ahead and then immediately turn LEFT up the hill on McKown Street (Midtown Motel on corner). Topside Inn is at the top of the hill on the right, with the entrance to our parking lot just before the Main House. Look for the entrance deck and "Office" signs to the right of the wall with our large business sign.
Driving from the North - two options
If you're already on the coast (Camden/Rockland, Bar Harbor, farther Down East) you can follow Route 1 South, past Damariscotta and Newcastle, to make a left turn on Route 27 South. If you reach Wiscasset, you've gone too far. Then, follow the section 'From Route 1 at 27 South' above.
Traveling on I-95 from northern Maine or eastern Canada (inland/upstate, Waterville, Bangor) - looks complicated, but well-marked and it works:
Follow I-95 South past Augusta, use Exit 103 to I-295 South, then Exit 43 and turn left on Route 197 East. Follow Route 197 about 5 miles, to end at stop sign in Richmond. Turn left and, after one quarter mile, bear right to stay on Route 197 East. Follow across two bridges to end at stop sign, and turn left to stay on Route 197. Follow to end at stop sign in Dresden, and turn right on Route 27 South. Follow Route 27 about 8 miles to end at stop sign in Wiscasset, and turn left onto Route 1 North.
Now continue through Wiscasset, across the two bridges, and follow signs to turn RIGHT on Route 27 South, to the 'Boothbay Harbor Region'. Then follow the section above 'From Routes 1 & 27-South: Boothbay Harbor Region'.
